Doctors, fashion world divided over Italian anorexia ad

ROME (AFP) — An Italian advertising campaign featuring photos of an emaciated girl won praise Tuesday from designers and the government for targeting anorexia, but campaigners warned it could encourage the disease.

Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani, famed for his shock campaigns for clothing company Benetton, launched a new campaign Monday -- in the middle of Milan fashion week -- featuring the naked body of an emaciated young woman.

Campaign to show the naked truth about anorexia

A provocative advertising poster by Oliviero Toscani, the Italian photographer, depicting an emaciated anorexic woman posing naked has caused shock in Italy and around the world.

The campaign, which coincides with the start of Milan Fashion Week, is intended to alert not only the fashion industry but also young women to the dangers of anorexia. The woman on the poster is Isabelle Caro, a French model who, at 27, weighs only 31kg (4st 12lb).

Researchers say 'skinny' gene really exists

A team of American researchers say they may have found the "skinny" gene after they were able to manipulate obesity among worms and mice.

Published in the Sept. 5 issue of the journal Cell Metabolism by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, the report looks at the role played by a single gene in fat formation.

Greater activity in the "adipose" gene -- first discovered in fruit flies 50 years ago -- was found to keep fruit flies, worms and mice skinny, regardless of how much they ate.

She has suffered from shaking, headaches and hair loss, sources told The Enquirer. What’s more, doctors fear her life could be endangered if her weight continues to drop.
